Religious Liberty is a Fundamental American Right…

President Obama has again targeted the US Constitution in an effort I believe is at the heart of his “transforming America” agenda.

It is interesting to watch how a supposed constitutional law teacher approaches the constitution with such disregard. If Obamacare is not deemed unconstitutional in its mandates to force Americans to buy health insurance, we are in for a revolution. I believe we will see the first step in that revolution on Election Day 2012.

As part of the President’s healthcare bill he is mandating private religious institutions to provide contraception and abortion drugs as part of their “health plans” for employees. The argument is that there are non-religious employees and they deserve plans that include the morning after pill or condoms. It is a red herring argument. The true motivation is to undermine religious liberty.  These employees can choose to work at other organizations that provide such benefits or pay for those services themselves. They have a choice.

These private, Catholic hospitals are operated under the doctrines of religious beliefs that do not support contraception or abortion. These religious hospitals are being told they have to change, ignore their beliefs or be shut down by the government. This fight is not about abortion or contraception but a fundamental First Amendment fight. The First Amendment reads:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The free exercise of religion is the reason people migrated to this country in the first place. Religious liberty is in our DNA as a country and this President is trying to “transform” this country by undermining this basic principle. His assault on Catholics is despicable and indicative of his feelings about our Judeo Christian values. He is disguising his argument by saying Catholic hospitals get federal money therefore need to fall under the general employment rules the same as other organizations. The problem with the argument is that the Catholic Hospitals provide a necessary service in many communities and it is the Federal Government that should be bending over backwards thanking them for the good work they do for so many non- Catholics.

This mandate to undermine Catholic doctrine could result in the closing of Catholic institutions which would be devastating in some communities. I wonder if the Federal Government would mandate Muslim institutions to serve pork on their menus?

This President is anti-Catholic, anti- Constitution, and anti-American.  He is a disgrace and needs to be rejected in November. Religious people of all faiths need to band together to maintain one of the most basic freedoms of American life; religious liberty. America is a beacon for all faiths to practice without the intrusion of government telling them what they must accept as doctrine. This President has declared war on Catholics and must be defeated. Tragedy and Disappointment…

Our hearts go out to all of the victims in Arizona. It was a horrific tragedy for the families that ended up victimized by a deranged individual. This individual was telegraphing his mental instability to all those that knew him and of him. He was a deranged individual period.


The disappointment with this event is the way some are trying to assault our First Amendment rights by leveraging this tragedy. The First Amendment was enshrined in the Constitution specifically to guard against the conversation taking place in the media today. Too many are talking about the political dialogue taking place in or country is somehow responsible for this deranged individual’s act of terror.

Any individual that has studied our history understands the political rhetoric in this country has always been heated and passionate. Our founders knew the government’s propensity to try to stop the people from speaking out against their government, and incidents like the one in Arizona are exactly why we need the First Amendment. Without it our politicians would have already passed a law restricting your speech. The political debate is so heated and passionate because politicians, government officials, and the media have stopped listening to the people. The people in the government are bankrupting our country and it is every citizen’s duty to speak out against the outrages of this government. We lose our freedom when we stop speaking out against the corruption that permeates today’s politicians and administration. It does not mean that because we speak out we are fueling some kind of violence. People that are violent will find any excuse to act out. To blame political rhetoric is an act against our constitutional principles.

The First and Second Amendments will come under assault in the coming days and weeks. The left and some of the Republicans are going to try to make people feel uncomfortable speaking out against government. They will say the level of rhetoric is “vitriolic”. Don’t fall for it. This is the same group that has allowed television to become the perverted arena it is today. They use the First Amendment to protect pornography, foul language, and terrorists that want to kill us. But now all of a sudden it is the people speaking out against the government is a danger we can no longer accept. These people are transparent and enemies of the republic. That’s right, I said enemy of the republic. Is that “hate” speech?

If you have the opportunity to talk to someone that supports modifying free speech, ask them to be specific. Ask them; which words are off limits; what context can we use certain words; who will decide what words are considered inflammatory; what will be the consequences of speaking out against our government? Get specific and watch them squirm. Just keep asking questions about what, who and how they intend to monitor free speech?

When they attack the Second Amendment ask how people will protect themselves against the deranged individuals that never let the law get in their way when it comes to getting guns. Guns allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminals, and as the founders feared from the power of an out of control government.

This is a constitutional battle that is taking place as a result of this tragedy. The families of this tragedy deserve our prayers and support. The effort to chill free speech deserves our full attention and we must fight back and stand tall because we know our rhetoric is needed to protect against a tyrannical government and politicians that are positioning to steal our free speech…

Words Mean Things…

The process of writing our constitution was painstakingly debated because words mean things. When you choose words it is important they reflect the meaning you intend so it is no wonder there is a concerted effort underfoot to change the meaning of words and history by the enemies of our constitution, and it is happening every day, every chance they get.

Take for instance the president and secretary of state discussing our right to “freedom of worship” as opposed to right to “the free exercise of religion” as stated in the constitution. At first glance they may seem similar but freedom to worship is not the same as freedom of religion. There are many religions that define the terms of how they worship therefore free to practice their religion. Freedom to worship is not religion specific and taken to the next step could be defined by the government since it is not tied to religion. For some this may seem trivial but for thinking individuals it is the difference between protecting their religion and losing their religion.

Words and phrases slightly altered can be the difference of a free people and a people governed through tyranny. The first amendment states:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The choice of the words our founders used is clear to the intent of this amendment. But these words have been turned upside down to argue that no religious mention can happen in a public building. You tell me where those words are found in this amendment?

The second amendment states:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

One of the most challenged amendments of the first ten clearly stated protects the individual right to keep and bear Arms. It is often argued that this right is tied to being in a militia which its opponents equate to the military. But the definition of militia, is not the military. In the context of the day, a “militia” was every “ordinary citizen’s” responsibility to protect the state. It was independent of an organized military as we have today. So when it is stated a well regulated “militia”, they are not talking about the military, they are talking about “ordinary citizens”. To make it even clearer they added, “the right of the people…” It was as if they could see into the future.

In order to challenge this amendment its opponents have resorted to distorting the meanings of the words and phrases as well as ignored the context of the time.

Words make up the foundation of our constitution and were chosen with particular care. We can’t ignore the meaning of words, or when they are tied to other words and phrases, and we can’t ignore the context and meaning of words at the time they were written.

That is why the enemies of our constitution are always trying to breathe “life” into the document, arguing it is living. It is why the constitution’s enemies are always trying to evolve the meanings of words to meet their goals to undermine constitutional law, and it is why we need to remember; words mean things, and to never forget the context they were written in so we can protect the constitution…
