Oprah; Just another pol?

Oprah Winfrey does not want to have Sarah Palin on her show which has a huge demographic of women viewers. This is sad and dangerous for Oprah because part of her appeal is her normally a-political stand over the past decade. Up until Obama, she has stayed away from the political fray which is so much safer in a divided America.

The risk for Oprah here is that both conservative and liberal women watch Oprah, and if she is seen as supporting liberal candidates she may lose many conservative women viewers. Oprah is a skilled interviewer and could clearly navigate one with Sarah Palin. What she is afraid of is that she may really like her. And if Oprah likes her that could have an impact on the voters in her audience. It wouldn’t be an endorsement, but it would be an endorsement.

So if she chooses not to host Palin and the story takes flight, she and her show lose. If she does, she wins but so does Sarah, and only Obama risks the loss of some women votes. The right thing for the self proclaimed woman’s advocate is to have Sarah on the show. No matter how you slice it, Sarah is a history making woman that deserves the opportunity to be seen in the Oprah setting by the rest of the women in America.

I like Oprah as a person, and I hope she does the right thing…

I think it was Rush who said today, we don't want Gov Palin on Oprah -- we don't want her to become some pop culture icon and I totally agree. I want to see her on some serious political shows (although they aren't many of those) and debating Biden - we have a serious candidate, I hope she stays in that light and off of Oprah.

You're right, it's a lose lose for her. I bet Hoprah will alienate some women fans of hers. They will be even more open to checking out Palin. Oprah doesn't want Palin on her show because she is afraid Palin might sway some of her viewers away from Obama. Oprah is afraid of hurting Obama's chances, she knows he has a tough fight with Palin on the ticket.

Too be fair though, she had Obama on before he was running, when his books came out. To have Palin on now that she's running would mean Oprah would really have to have Obama on now too. But then she probably would be accused of breaking some campaign finance laws or something.

Sheri: I agree with you on the "serious" political shows. It was a no win for Oprah to support Obama officially. Politics divides people and Oprah should have known better...

I agree that Gov. Palin should not appear on Oprah, but Oprah has a problem now. She has a pretty mainstream audience and by denying the Gov. access to her show she has brought more attention to Gov. Palin, which only makes people more interested in the why's. It's getting more interesting.

Totally agree! They just do not get it -- never will.

A Palin appearance would leave a lasting impression of honesty which is inconsistent with the guided dialectics which Oprah dispenses. People would be reminded of what has been missing from American media for the past fifty years, and the public would be reminded, too, that conservative women are better people to listen to than socialist espousing women.

As my daughter reminded me, Sarah Palin did not ask to go on Oprah's show. Hopefully, she wouldn't go on that show even if asked. Sarah Palin doesn't need Oprah; Sarah's got us...
